A Toolkit for both Master and Apprentice

Everyone is good at something; but when it comes to public speaking, most of us are not good at much of anything. Death by PowerPoint is endemic, and Public Speaking is still the number one fear for a surprisingly large percentage of the population.

This is why World Class Speaking in Action is such a ray of hope, a lifeline in a world that craves clear communication but seems unable to give it. Talent has traditionally been passed on through a system of apprenticeship, and seldom by genetics. The son is rarely able to follow in the father’s footsteps. This is because talent is closely connected to a number of democratic elements, the right teacher, the right tools, and persistent practice. This book provides all of those elements, and leaves the ball in your court.

This book has not one, but 50 authors, and they have one thing in common. They are all certified as World Class Speaking Coaches. Imagine how long it would take to learn the lessons in this book if you had to rely on your own experience? Experience is supposed to be the worst teacher, because if gives the test before the lesson. You don't have to be perfect, you just need to do it!

These guys are really smart... I came to buy the book after stumbling across Mitch Meyerson's quiz "Are You a World Class Speaker" on his website because it didn't make me feel bad for not being perfect but rather opened to my eyes where I am now and how I could improve. Just by finishing the quiz I felt enlightened and empowered...

The book has helped even more with the key competencies of storytelling:
selling, process-driven, next steps, anchor-driven, beginning with a bang, succinct, focus, dynamics, involvement, staging, and audience research.

One idea that really resonated with me is that "when you lift yourself up, you let your audience down." The advice is to sell the audience on how great your process is rather than how great you are. Not only do I think this is smart psychology, but it motivates me more to speak publicly because it moves the focus from ME to WHAT my message is. I realized this before when I read Success Secrets of the Motivational Superstars welcome reminder to my confidence.

Plein Air Painting

There is no question that Curtis's technical ability is excellent. Many, many photos prove this. I was, however, disappointed in the gray, dullness of many of the paintings. I think this is due to the fact that he starts many of them with grayed paper and washes. I usually take 5 or 6 pages of notes to remember salient points. With this book I took 1/2 page as he kept repeating the same things over and over in a different way. Proving his point with examples of paintings. It is an excellent book for watercolorists as he demos some step-by-step paintings. And as I said his technical skill is par none.

I chose this book because I love his use of palette and brush work, also the English landscape subject matter. I was very disappointed after reading the book how little David divulges of his actual palette and start to finish technique. He repeats the same mantra over and over with very little new insight after the first couple of chapters. It is a beautiful book but not what I expected, I purchased his book "Painting with Impact" at the same time and felt the same about it.

The positive: There are a lot of nice color reproductions of paintings, and a few insights into the workings of a seasoned pro.

The negative: There's a lot of repetition and self-aggrandizement, and very little practical advice.

In the end, it doesn't sum up to much of real use to a painter looking to improve his or her plein air technique. I hate to say it, but it comes out feeling like the main thrust of his advice is, "If you want to succeed at plein air painting, you have to be a good plein air painter, like me."

He tells you that you should get out there and paint outdoors, and that in order to succeed at doing so, you must be quick and confident, and know what you are doing, which comes from lots of experience. He tells you that the main focus of plein air landscape painting is to capture the mood or the feeling of a place, and so you should do that. He gives very few practical clues as to how to go about it, other than to just get out there and do it.

You should look for a good composition, consider the scale and format of what you are going to paint, the tonal and color keys, etc. Don't rush into the painting. But then don't NOT rush into the painting, because time is not on your side. You need to get right in there and make the main statement as quickly as you can. It takes lots of confidence and skill.

That pretty much sums up what advice he does give. Even the step-by-step breakdowns reveal little of his working process, other than the basic order in which he did each painting. The text ends up amounting to essentially, "I get in there and start slapping washes on the paper, dipping my brush into a lot of pre-mixed things, until I have blocked everything in. Then I go back and resolve details."

I gather that the author is a good landscape painter with a lot of experience, that he has reached a point where he works in a very fast, intuitive, and holistic way, and that, upon being asked to explain how he paints, he is at a loss to say much about it. I think that's all perfectly fair, but then why write "how-to" books on the subject?

Piano playing book succeeds despite itself

The content of the book is very good, concise, and well thought out. HOWEVER, Amazon should label the items that they self-publish in Lexington Kentucky. This is one of several such Amazon-self-published books that I have ordered. It is not disclosed to you when you order. Some have been very expensive. Without fail the binding, paper quality, graphics, photography, and editing are very subpar in these "on demand" self-published Lexington, Ky books. This is no exception.

It is not a "music book" that you can use on your piano stand since it is trade paperback size and won't stay open, even if it were of the quality of a normal publishing house book. Content close to 5 stars. Quality of paper and printing, only a 1.5 stars.

A great book that makes learning chords fast, easy and fun

When you have to learn large number of chords, there are 2 ways to go about it.

- Learn each without understanding the relationships between them. You can certainly do it but it takes longer and it is not fun.

- Learn the simple rules that relates these chords and you can learn whole groups of them. It is lot easier to remember the simple rules than remember notes for each chords.

This book breaks the vast number of piano chords in to well defined groups and explains the simple rules that allow student to move from one group to the other. The rules are explained very simply in lay man terms and not using musical jargon that some other books tend to do. Even with in a given chord group, the author suggests very clever ordering (i.e. Do chords with all white keys first, follow that by chords with white on the outside and black on the inside etc) that is very intuitive, easy to remember and fun.

The book assumes some basic music scale knowledge so it may not be for beginners. It was perfect for me and my 2 young sons who already knew major and minor scales and some chords. The book gave us a clear structure to proceed that was even better than a live instructor. It was so good to see the twinkle in the eyes and the Ahaa coming out of my 7 year old son when I was teaching him from this book. It was even better to see him make rapid progress in learning chords based on the simple rules.

The binding and paper quality of the book does not make justice to the excellent way the information is presented with in.

I have bought many books in the hopes of learning chords quickly. None of them came close to this book. Highly recommended.

Exciting Piano

I feel like I've died and gone to heaven. Man am I excited and motivated because of this book. I can now play dozens and dozens of tunes and they sound good. I feel like the musical world is at my feet after learning chords. I've learned from this guy in a short period of time what would have taken years going to piano lessons. The book lessons make you understand and be able to apply them to the piano. I have a real good idea about what I'm doing now and have been shown the piano is played with the brain and that once you understand chord relationships, you are off and running musically - and all of a sudden I'm a heck lot better than I thought I could ever be - geeez, I wish something like this was available years ago. The sax had been a hobby most of my life so I could read the melody but had no idea what was going on with the chords. When I reitred I wanted to learn the piano and found there was no shortcut; until, I found this book. I took lessons for a while and had to see a teacher every week and learned maybe two things each time. Never did completely understand, and then drill, after drill after drill - this was going to take years and I didn't have the patience or motivation. The book changes all that and teaches you dozens of chords in a short period of time and you understand them and can use them immediately and the author makes it fun with a humorus real life practical approach. What a wonderful comprehensive tool this is for learning chords and chord progressions.

I can play tunes I never dreamed possible and jazz is fun, I am really stoked, thanks pianoman Shinn.

About the Author
Margaret L. Andersen (B.A., Georgia State University; M.A., Ph.D. University of Massachusetts, Amherst) is the Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware, where she has also served in several senior administrative positions, including most recently as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Diversity. She holds secondary appointments in Black American Studies and Women and Gender Studies. She is the author of several books, including (among others) THINKING ABOUT WOMEN, recently published in its tenth edition; the best-selling anthology, RACE, CLASS, AND GENDER (co-edited with Patricia Hill Collins, now in its ninth edition); LIVING ART: THE LIFE OF PAUL R. JONES, AFRICAN AMERICAN ART COLLECTOR; and ON LAND AND ON SEA: A CENTURY OF WOMEN IN THE ROSENFELD COLLECTION. She is a member of the National Advisory Board for Stanford University's Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, the Past Vice President of the American Sociological Association, and Past President of the Eastern Sociological Society, from which she received the ESS Merit Award. She has also received two teaching awards from the University of Delaware and the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award.

Kim A. Logio is Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Saint Joseph's University, where she recently received a teaching award. She often teaches research methods and guides students through the completion of their undergraduate thesis projects. A member of the American Sociological Association and the Eastern Sociological Society, Dr. Logio has been interviewed for local television and National Public Radio for her work on body image and race, class, and gender differences in nutrition and weight control behavior. Howard F. Taylor has taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, and Princeton University, where he is presently Professor of Sociology and former director of the African American Studies Center. He has published over fifty articles in sociology, education, social psychology, and race relations. His books include THE IQ GAME (Rutgers University Press), a critique of hereditarian accounts of intelligence; BALANCE IN SMALL GROUPS (Van Nostrand Reinhold), translated into Japanese; and the forthcoming RACE AND CLASS AND THE BELL CURVE IN AMERICA. He has appeared widely before college, radio, and TV audiences, including ABC's Nightline. Past president of the Eastern Sociological Society, Dr. Taylor is a member of the American Sociological Association and the Sociological Research Association, an honorary society for distinguished research. He is a winner of the DuBois-Johnson-Frazier Award, given by the American Sociological Association for distinguished research in race and ethnic relations, and the President's Award for Distinguished Teaching at Princeton University. Great textbook but...

I rented this book for my Intro to Sociology class. $20 to use a book for a semester? Sweet. The articles in this text are wonderful and insightful, but some girl wrote dumb commentary all over the damn book. There is writing in about a quarter of the book in black ink with huge handwriting. Here are just some of her thought provoking words: "doesn't really make sense," "I'm going to a hospital, thanks," "isn't social security like dead?" and "a girl that seeks attention won't attrack a holesome guy. simple." Aside from the commentary, this is an amazing textbook filled with interesting articles and information.

This didn't really keep my attention in class. Which made it very difficult to get good grades in my online class. The small articles didn't really match the class in my opinion, but it was required.
