Regency Light with a Twist

I enjoyed this Regency suspense. Although it is very light, it has the correct flavour a reader expects to find in a Regency. The background on the Irish regiment added a little extra to the mix and it's great to see Regency writers who do their homework, rather than have 21st century characters in a 19th century environment. I have read several of Maggi's novels and she always produces the goods.

Don't expect dark twists or seething undercurrents in this novel - you won't get them. This is more of a mystery than a deep suspense. An easy, short read.

Not the best

I've been going through this author's work and mostly enjoying it all. This novella wasn't up to her usual standards though. It's a short story about an H, who is an Earl but he lives in the country and works his land. The h is a childhood friend and distant cousin but they haven't seen each other in years. They meet again when the h's parents decide to visit their mutual cousin, an older man who has been ill. The h is very attracted to the H but fears her beautiful sister has set her sights on the H. On the night they arrive the H offers to host the family as the ill cousin doesn't want them to stay. The h was unable to sleep and she sees the H going out in the early hours of the morning and then returning some hours later. The next morning they learn that the ill cousin has been murdered. To say much more would be unfair as the story develops from there with the main characters teaming up to try to discover who the murderer is.

I felt that the writing in this novella was not as good as what Ms Andersen usually produces. She introduces the idea that the h wants to seduce the H because she wants one chance to be with him. She thinks he is going to choose her sister. Honestly it wasn't in keeping with the rest of the story and I really wish it hadn't been introduced. It brings to mind the fact that the h wouldn't be honourable. Who admires someone that wants to seduce their sister's intended? This is hypothetical but you get my meaning - very tacky.

An enjoyable read!

Just finished this short story/novella and enjoyed it. Loved Gerard. Sweet man who wooed his love, Harriet and stayed a gentleman. Like the mystery that was intertwined. Didn't guess the reason for the murder, but guessed...

A pleasant read, and the first of Ms. Andersen's I've read. Will take a closer look at her other books.

About the Author
The extraordinary life of Laurens van der Post is not easily capsulized. Author of of many books, farmer, soldier, prisoner of war, political adviser to British heads of state, educator, humanitarian, philosopher, explorer, and conservationist are titles that barely indicate the depth and breadth of this rare individual. Born in 1906 in the interior of southern Africa, he lived among the people who created the first blueprint for life on earth, becoming the principal chronicler of the Stone Age Kalahari Bushmen. He was also one of C.G. Jung's closest friends for sixteen years. Van der Post dedicated his life to teaching the meaning and value of indigenous cultures in the modern world, a world he felt is in danger of losing its spiritual identity to technology, prejudice, empty values, and a lack of understanding of the interconnectedness of all life on earth. Awarded a knighthood (the C.B.E.) in 1981, Sir Laurens died after his 90th birthday, in December, 1996.

This first-person narrative about van der Post's expedition to find the ancestors of the Kalahari Bushmen is almost mythic. Nettleton verbally recreates it in a manner similar to a folktale. Van der Post's fascination, awe and respect come forth as the listener gets to know the Bushmen. The enthusiasm and excitement in Nettleton's voice translates itselfÐlisteners are observers to the mighty hunts and the celebratory dances around the fires. Nettleton even teaches some of Bush language by presenting words and their translations, which he reuses often enough to help the listener retain. This beautiful story is almost perfectly told. Exploring Africa's southern desert in search of its original human population

In the 50s, van der Post organized a group to find the last surviving bushmen living in their traditional way, entirely dependent on what they knew of the desert, untainted by modern thought and technology. On his parents' farm, he'd grown up with bushman workers who taught him their language and touched his heart with their stories of slaughter and abuse of their people by black tribes and whites. After immense frustration with his film team, and fruitless weeks in the great swamp in the north of modern Botswana, they start again and contact a family living in the dune country south of there. What they learn, about the very able and intelligent ancestors of all humanity, is both poignant and fascinating to anyone with an interest in culture and the earliest history of people.

One of the last eye-witness accounts

Well-written and accurate, Laurens managed to meet one of the last truly "wild" bushman groups before this amazing people became overwhelmed by modern "civilization" (to understand how they were ten years before and 20 years after Laurens' visit, I recommend "The Harmless People"). By the time anthropologists and, later, dna-scientists became fascinated by Bushmen, they could no longer hunt as they could when Laurens visited them. Laurens describes the Bushmen and their way of life with intimate care, relating to them as one human being to another. Not like a scientist studying an "object". He is also a good writer, for example when he describes the eland-hunt. I loved to read this book while travelling through Southern Africa. Especially for travellers to Okavango & surroundings, this is a must-read.

However, though the kids and I like the content, DK used a slick paper stock. It's so slick that pencil marks are almost invisible; and trying to erase just leaves a messy smudge. Pens work fine, but mistakes happen. Pencils are a must for the inevitable errors that need erasing. So, until DK starts printing these workbooks on a stock that accommodates pencil marks and erasing, I can't recommend them.

this format is not the best way to teach this material.

At Costco they were selling a Kingergarten Jumbo Workbook by DK for approximately $11. The Jumbo book ended up containing all 5 of the DK workbooks for kindergarteners. I think this book would be perfect for a 4-5 year old... as there is no significant writing as was in the literary arts book.

The spelling section has a title page with a bear in a rocker, a table of contents, followed by worksheets. All images are in black and white so they can be colored, but the pages do include some color on the borders and edges - in my copy its a orangy-yellow. A good deal of the worksheets. The top of each worksheet has a fact to read and below it some sort of interactive question/instructions.

The book contains the alphabet (just to read/sing it), letter tracing (5 pages only as review), matching lower and upper case letters, vowels, consonants, sounds, writing three letter words, rhyming words, syllables, basic reading, sentences, basic reading comprehension,

To get the best learning out of this workbook, you need to complete the reading and writing part of the workbook with your child following the parent instructions at the back of the book.

Overall, I liked the language arts book better. I don't feel the books were overly redundant, its just that I didn't find this format the best way to teach this material.

A must-buy (non-relativistic) quantum mechanics textbook for self-learning beginner

If you are interested in quantum mechanics and you want to learn the basics on your own, then this is the best book I have ever seen for this purpose. The coverage of this book is similar to other standard textbook at this level. Another famous textbook at this level is An Introduction to Quantum Mechanics written by David Griffiths. Both Rae's and Griffiths's books are reader friendly, which means they are easy to read. However, I do not recommend beginers to use Griffiths's one as the first quantum mechanics book. The main difference between them is that Rae tries to give you a brief but enough introduction of quantum mechanics experiments, which obviously help readers understanding the need of quantum mechanics. If you pick Griffiths's book, you definitely need to read a standard textbook about modern physics, or quantum physics, which takes you more time and might bring some unnecessiary confusions to the reader. In addition, I believe that this book is good for advanced undergraduate students as a revision textbook because it is precise and concise. After all, I highly recommend this book to interested readers.

I am not usually one for books as I prefer to take my own concise notes. When it came down to it, I could not have been more pleased with the down to earth, no nonsense way in which the content of this book is presented. Each section of the book starts with a clear concise entry into what is to be worked through, leading on to a series of background mathematical statements and fully worked theory.

I took a full month to fully read though it, which in itself is a testament to the detail and thought which was applied in vast quantities to such a small book. In comparison I usually read a good sci-fi book in a day or two.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone studying physics, either late in their first year as an undergraduate or as background reading to a course.
