A good book that feels a lot longer than it actually is.

I usually like reading sports history books because it educates me on aspects of a sport that I don't know much about. While Tor! is a good book on its own, reading it ten years after its publication leaves me wanting to learn more about the years after its publishing. Had this focused on one particular aspect of German football (eg. the 70s), it would work a lot more rather than its century-long look. Had I paid attention to the books publish year before starting, I probably wouldn't have read it. However, even with that, the book does a good job at explaining all the ups and down of German football over the 20th century. At times some chapters felt very long, as the author tries to put as much information in each chapter, so some people might be a little put off if you like to read a chapter at a time.
If you are looking for a book on german football history before the 21st century, definitely pick this up. If you're a person wanting to learn about more recent events in Germany (eg. the 2014 WC success, Bayern's latest domination, etc...) there might be better options out there.

Very enriching

A great book indeed if you're looking to watch more Bundesliga matches, especially the current talks of how the German league has the highest average attendance than all the leagues in europe, its financially stable, and how more prominent stars and managers (aka Pep Guardiola) are wanting to go to Germany. Since this book was written in 2003, there's a 10 year gap and missing out events such as the 2006 World Cup, Bayern's failures in Champions League Finals, and Dortmund's current dominance. Nevertheless, its a great read to get familiar with the clubs and individuals that forged new expansions to German football and leading to world cups. I think what most struck me was of all the talk of how great the structure of today's Bundesliga, history shows that there had been tremendous problems for a long time, internally and externally. In light of 50 years of the Bundesliga, I hope Mr. Hesse would write another book, explaining the last decade of German football and get us outsiders up to date for the coming years.

Easy read, informative with right balance of light & serious stuff.

I bought a kindle version, and finished reading it within 3 weeks (quite casual read everyday). For a casual follower of football, the book has the right balance of being entertaining enough and informative on the football history of Germany. It is not too technical, and was written sometimes with a sense of humour, vividly demonstrating the unpredictability of the beautiful game. It also has the right balance of Bundesliga introduction and German national football campaign. All in all, it is a good past-time read, and well suited for people who intend to enhance their knowledge in the game, and how Germany has come to where it is now. The only pity of the book is that it is only until 2003, with a brief touch of 2006 World Cup. A new version would be needed to catch up what happened since then, especially Jurgen Klinsman & Co.'s reign at German football. Strongly recommended!
