Processes in Microbial Ecology discusses the major processes carried out by viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and other protists in freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems.
Written by one of the leading scientists in the field, the text focuses on biogeochemical processes, starting with primary production and the initial fixation of carbon into cellular biomass, before exploring how that carbon is degraded in both oxygen-rich (oxic) and oxygen-deficient (anoxic) environments.
The book neatly connects processes occurring at the micron scale to events happening at the global scale, including the carbon cycle and its connection to climate change issues.
A final chapter is devoted to symbiosis and other relationships between microbes and larger organisms.
Processes in Microbial Ecology is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in microbial ecology and related fields.

Review
"Kirchman's breadth of personal experience in many facets of microbial ecology is clear and he is at his best in describing these topics. There are few topics in microbial ecology that are not covered by the volume." -- The Quarterly Review of Biology

Best text I've read in ages.
By RGL
This is an extremely readable textbook that takes you from general structure of microbes, through growth and primary production (photosynthesis), and biodegradation of carbon polymers (like proteins), controls over growth, mainly by predation and viruses, to community structure, which is discussed mainly via genetic methods (I actually understood those two chapters!) There are also good chapters on the nitrogen cycle, anoxic processes, and geomicrobiology. Archaea, bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae, and predatory protists are all covered, and interactions between them are described. Soils and water are covered pretty equally. It's a very complete look at microbial ecology. And the best part is that you can actually enjoy reading it.

It is a good textbook

I am currently taking this class. The textbook is very informative. I think it should have more pictures as examples though.
