A must for Cantors and everybody else too :-)

As someone studying to lead prayer service (a Sheliach Tzibbur) I had begun a journey to find my voice. I am very lucky to have ended up fining an outstanding Voice teacher as well as great Cantorial teacher. The Cantors in the city have get-to-gethers on a monthly basis (I promise I am getting to the point about this book) and recently had an eminent Canadian Tenor come speak to us. He first did a very challenging Cantorial piece and then proceeded to say: "Remember when you started and you did Italian songs and arias as part of your training? I've got news for you. This is something you should do every day for the rest of your singing career. This and proper vocal technique will allow you to sing for many years past the time when most people can no longer sing". This is the best of those books. My voice teacher always chooses this version as the best choice of Italian and the best version. The piano cd is an enormous help (unless you are such a diva that you have a live-in rehearsal pianist). Enjoy!!!

I have taught voice for almost 30 years. Yes, I purchased the newer versions of the "classic" Italian songs, and use the intro materials and some of the ornamentation, but the piano accompaniments in the Schirmer are much more musical, and this is still my favorite version of any of the anthologies of Italian songs.

She allowed him to lead her towards the beach, where they both sat down in the sand and stared out at the ocean. Or rather, it was Cami who was staring out at the ocean. After a moment, she realized that Drew was staring at her. She turned her eyes towards him, and her breath caught at the his hungry look.

One moment they were staring at each other, the next, they were kissing. Cami didn’t know how it started, but what she did know was that Drew’s lips were suddenly on her own, hard and hungry, his tongue seeking entrance into her mouth.

For a split second, Cami froze. She had not been with a man since her divorce and hadn’t planned on being with one now. But Drew had been so sweet, and he was so sexy, and his lips felt delicious against her own. So Cami finally allowed herself to relax, leaning into the kiss and opening her mouth to let him in.

I am loving this series. The heroine is a single mother with extreme ex issues, and the hero has a hard time pulling himself away from work to have a personal life.

I wonder who's issues will cause the most drama? There are some very explosive possibilities on both sides.

The cliffhanger at the end left me wondering what will happen next?

The Stubborn Suitor Book one by Alexia Wilder. This is an ARC in exchange for a review.
Cami Hendricks, a nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital. She had recently gone through a very nasty divorce with her ex who was rich and a lawyer himself. One of his colleges represented him in the divorce leaving her with only child support for their three year old daughter, Madison. Cami came away from the divorce with little to nothing. Cami is at work and on her break when her ex calls her to tell her that he is getting married and that his intended is going to be a stay at home wife. He also said that because she could not have children that they were going to fight for primary custody of Madison. The next day Cami and Maggy her best friend, talked Cami into going to a weekend beach party at her folks beach house. Beings it was her ex's turn to have Madison, she agrees.
At the party Cami is introduced to Drew, a friend of Maggy's brother. Drew is a business man worth around 2 1/2 billion dollars according to Maggy. Drew is a tall, dark headed, amber colored eyes, and extremely attractive, with dimples when he smiles. There is chemistry right away, between the two.Cami and Drew share a hot "third base" action at the beach. Then she sees Drew with Analise, who is the daughter of an important Client of his. Cami thinks that he has a girl friend and she is upset about this. Cami tries to avoid Drew the rest of the weekend. She finds out later that Maggy and her brother set there meeting up and that Drew had contacted Grant for Cami's phone number and other information stating that "he had become obsessed with Cami." Drew calls her a few days later and she agrees to meet him for drinks hoping that will settle her nerves for the first court hearing on Friday which is the next day. One thing leads to another and the end up in bed together, she falls asleep in his arms, only to find herself alone the next morning, no note or anything from him........can't wait for paart 2!!!

HOT & COLD......WHAT IS IT WITH MEN!!!!

Cami & Drew, the unlikely pair, but there is more to Drew than Cami knows. Cami Is a nurse, single mom of Madison her 3 year old. Cami works 10-12 hour shifts so that she can have three days off to spend with her daughter, and when she is working her mother takes care of Madison. Her mom is always telling her that she needs to lose weight but it's not that she's over weight, she just has more curves that a normal person. Cami's ex-husband is giving her a hard time, now that he's getting married again, want's primary custody of their daughter and Cami won't have it, so he's suing her for custody. Cami works so that she can pay her lawyer and her bills, but on the weekends when Madison is supposed to be with her ex she feels lost, So her friend from work, Maggie tells her she is going to the beach house for the weekend with her cause she has to be there and she doesn't want to be alone. While at the beach house there are cocktail party's where there are really rich people and Cami feels a little out of her elememt but then Maggie introduces her to Drew Sloan a friend of her family. They seem to get along and as they leave to party to go talk quietly they are intercepted by some very rich people who want to talk to Drew and they way they are talking makes her feel small & inadequite so she leaves them to go finds her friends. Later as the party is almost wound down she walks out on the boat dock to look at the ocean and just chill. On her way back to the house Drew is leaning against a fence and comes to her and the go for a walk on the beach & talk and just have fun. Then they get a little touchy/feely and when things go almost to far Cami calls it off and Drew says it fine. He helps her to her feet and the walk back to the house for the night. Cami is always trying to analyze everything and she can't get over how she felt about Drew but she just doesn't have time for a man in her life. The next morning at breakfast they are having a great talk when a model comes over to sit next to Drew and then it was like Cami wasn't there. Hot & cold that was the way it was with him and she just got mad and left. Later Maggie & she lay out on the beach and then they have to get ready for that night's cocktail party, and when she see's Drew his arm around the model and it's once again like she isn't even there. So she decides to just let it go.

How to win customers on the Internet

Advertising is not dead, but content marketing is the driver that leading companies now use to capture the hearts and minds of their customers, according to Joe Pulizzi in this book. We need to be epic with our content marketing, focusing more on our customers and less on our products; to sell more, we need to be marketing our products less.

So what is this thing that the author calls "epic content marketing"? There are six principles:

* Your content must fill an unmet need or answer a question for your customer
* You must deliver your content consistently
* Your content needs to be written in your voice, preferably with some humour
* You need to express an opinion rather than giving a balanced history report
* You must avoid sales speak, as it destroys the value of your content
* You must aim to produce the very best content relating to your content niche

The book goes on to describe how to identify and define your content niche and content marketing mission statement, how to create an editorial calendar and manage the content creation process, different content types and content assets, how to use social media in marketing your stories, other content promotion techniques, and how to measure the impact of your content marketing initiatives.

The author writes in a clear and compelling style, and his advice seems to be very useful to anyone engaged in business but particularly to those with a marketing role. It seems to me that the more that businesses get on the content marketing bandwagon, the harder it will be for anyone to get found amongst all of the content, so there is a big advantage to getting into content marketing as soon as possible.

Hands Down the Best Content Marketing Book Available Now - Phenomenal Read

Content marketing is an evolving discipline. It has risen, very quickly, to become the most important tool in the digital marketing tool chest. Joe Pulizzi's new book, Epic Content Marketing, is quite simply, the very best book right now about the topic. I'm a content marketing guy myself, having written a couple of books on the subject and running a content development firm, so I know what's good and what's not. There are so many phenomenal takeaways in this book, I'm not sure where to begin. But before I do that, let me share with you why this is a "must have" book for your company:

* It covers content marketing from every angle and for every type of company, so it is comprehensive
* It brings up innovative ideas and strategies that no other book on the subject covers, so its groundbreaking
* The book is absolutely a page-turner, it flows so effortlessly. I finished the book, front to back on a 5-hour plane flight, and I never do that...with any book. That's how good this book is. So, it's easy to read.
* His enthusiasm for content marketing and passion for business "leap" off the page, you can't help but get caught up in Joe's positive energy. So, it's motivational.
* It is written by the "torchbearer" of the industry and one who I continually learn from...Joe Pulizzi, the guy who puts on the best content marketing event of the year, Content Marketing World. So, it's the absolute authority book.

And here are the specific things that I really enjoyed:

* The Foreword by Michael Brenner, VP of Marketing and Content Strategy at SAP. He explained how even a big, well respected company has learned and implemented the finer points of content marketing
* I like how he told his own story about Content Marketing Institute and how they use great content to power their own efforts
* And along those lines, Joe makes the book a personal story, by sharing parts of his private life to illustrate key points as well. He described how his own family uses a mission statement, which he has used to teach his children, and...how much it's made a difference. I like when authors share personal stories, it makes the reading experience more enjoyable.
* He makes a very key point to kick off the book..."your customers don't care about you, your products or your services. They care about themselves"...this is a mistake that so many companies are still making. This is a critically important distinction between companies that are winning and losing the content marketing game.
* Key insights into journalists and how they are changing the content marketing paradigm (ie. Joe mentions that "Journalists are no longer wary of working for non-media companies.")
* He explains a key change that most people have not thought about: the diminishing importance of traditional media outlets. He says "they simply do not have the resources that non-media companies have to compete over the long term". Translation: This means the door is wide open for any company to become the media in their industry.
* The case studies are inspiring: I loved the Legos story, Tesla, Coca-Cola's Content 2020 project, Red Bull and many more
* I loved his "Seven Ways to Take the Media World by Storm" on page 37...this is basically the blue print for your company to become a content marketing powerhouse. The "rent-to-own" strategy was a key learning point for me.
* The emphasis on "Story telling" and how it differs from being simply "content aware" or a "thought leader".
* The idea of focusing on subscription as a key content marketing goal. Very few companies do this now.
* Using Pippity for pop-over services - I'm checking them out this week!
* The idea of setting up "listening posts" to get real time feedback from customers (this is brilliant)
* Great section on Editorial Calendars and their importance to your content marketing success
* I LOVE how he spells out the harsh reality: that most SEO firms and traditional advertising firms don't get content marketing. Reader beware.

So, I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea: This is one of the best business books of the year, period. For all the above reasons and more, you absolutely NEED to get this book. It's quite simply an incredible read for any company, large or small, in any industry. Pick up a copy of Epic Content Marketing...today! You'll love it.

Be Epic - It's not hard with this book

In his closing address at Content Marketing World 2013, Joe Pulizzi advised more than 1700 content marketers in attendance to "Try". Like so many elements of content marketing, it's a simple concept to understand but difficult to implement. In his new book, Epic Content Marketing: How to Tell a Different Story, Break through the Clutter, and Win More Customers by Marketing Less, Pulizzi manages to demystify both the art and science of the burgeoning content revolution and give marketers confidence and inspiration. Importantly, he also challenges the reader to get uncomfortable and assume a few risks.

The book is organized into five distinct sections starting with the history of content marketing and moving through strategy, process, implementation and measurement. Suitable for both the seasoned professional and marketing intern, Pulizzi's advice and examples guide the reader through the essentials of a successful content marketing program. Each chapter is summarized with an "Epic Thoughts" section, a helpful recap of the key points of the chapter, along with a comprehensive list of "Epic Resources". I have been an ongong fan of Don Pendleton series for years.
With a monthly release per book on this, some can get sloppy.
Typos, even a dropped section of the story that didn't connect, probably to meet their standard page maximum.
Not up to their par on this release.
Story was good as normal, but other stuff slipped.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The child of Cuban immigrants, Oscar Hijuelos (1951–2013) was an American-born novelist and the first Hispanic writer to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. A native New Yorker, he earned a Master of Arts in Creative Writing from the City College of New York, where he studied under Susan Sontag, Donald Barthelme, and William S. Burroughs.

In addition to the Pulitzer, Hijuelos won the Rome Prize, an Ingram Merrill Foundation Award, the Hispanic Heritage Award for Literature as well as several grants from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. He wrote seven novels which have been translated into more than 25 languages.

Inspired by their heroes Xavier Cugat and Desi Arnaz, brothers Cesar and Nestor Castillo come to New York City from Cuba in 1949 with designs on becoming mambo stars. Eventually they do--performing with Arnaz on "I Love Lucy" in 1955 and recording 78s with their own band, the Mambo Kings. In his second novel, Hijuelos traces the lives of the flashy, guitar-strumming Cesar and the timid, lovelorn Nestor as they cruise the East Coast club circuit in a flamingo-pink bus. Enriching the story are the brothers' friends and family members--all driven by their own private dreams. The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love won a Pulitzer Prize in 1990.

The Mambo Kings are two brothers, Cesar and Nestor Castillo, Cuban-born musicians who emigrate to New York City in 1949. They form a band and enjoy modest success, playing dance halls, nightclubs and quince parties in New York's Latin neighborhoods. Their popularity peaks in 1956 with a guest appearance on the I Love Lucy show, playing Ricky Ricardo's Cuban cousins and performing their only hit song in a bittersweet event that both frames the novel and serves as its emblematic heart. Hijuelos's first novel, Our House in the Last World , was justly praised for its tender vignettes of emigre Cuban life; here, he tells of the triumphs and tragedies that befall two men blessed with gigantic appetites and profoundly melancholic hearts--Cesar, the elder, and the bandleader, committed to the pursuit of life's pleasures, and Nestor, he of the "dark, soulful countenance," forever plunging through a dark, Latin gloom. In a performance that deepens the canon of American ethnic literature, Hijuelos evokes, by day, a New York of crowded Harlem apartments made cheery by Cuban hospitality, and by night, a raucous club scene of stiletto heels and waxy pompadours--all set against a backdrop of a square, 1950s America that thinks worldliness means knowing the cha-cha. With an unerring ear for period idioms ("Hello you big lug") and a comic generosity that renders even Cesar's sexual bravado forgivable if not quite believable, Hijuelos has depicted a world as enchanting (yet much closer to home) as that in Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera . The lyricism of Hijuelos's language is wonderfully restrained, conveying with equal facility ribald comedy and heartfelt pathos. Despite a questionable choice of narrative conceit (Cesar recollects the novel from a seedy "Hotel Splendour" in 1980), Hijuelos's pure storytelling skills commission every incident with a life and breath of its own.

Keep An Open Mind

I read this book, for the first time, for a college American Literature course about seven years ago. The teacher warned everyone in advance that it "may appear to be a bit too descriptive, too sexual but to please keep an open mind" because this was an integral part of the book. He was right. I found this book to be fascinating, sensual and written clearly enough that I felt as though I was a character on the sidelines, watching these two brothers go through their lives. To the readers who found this degrading to women, try to realize that these were lovers in the true definition. They were Cuban men who absolutely adored women; they appreciated the beauty of all women and showed it in the most physical sense possible. As a woman, I found the book to be truly sensual and enjoyable. Since reading this book I have made a point to read all of Hijuelos' books and, every year or two, I pick up "Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love" to go back to that time of raw sensuality that Hijuelos describes so well.
My teacher was right. Keep an open mind while reading this, or any, book. But, don't deny yourself the luxury of reading such a wonderful book!

Hijuelos is a great writer

I had already read Simple Havana Melody and Mr. Ives Christmas and was developing a deep admiration for Oscar Hijuelos' talent as a writer. Since this is his best known work I knew I had to check it out. It is a very engaging book about Cuban brothers trying to make it in the US during the 50's Mambo craze. The story is very entertaining as many memorable characters both fictional and real Cuban musicians from the period are introduced.
The story while full of colorful epsiodes is ultimately tragic as the brothers age and life takes it's toll on each of them in very different ways.
Hijuelos uses sexual imagery and descriptions of food to create a steamy intensity to the story with great effect. That said the lurid sexual descriptions cited by many other reviewers may turn off some readers. While I was enjoying the book enough to overlook this, there are times when he does rely too much on this device and the novel starts to feel like a guilty pleasure. If you are OK with that type of writing then there are rewards to be had in the characterizations and plot. If you cannot stomach the hard-core sexual references that are integral to this book then stay away and try one of his other novels.

Beautiful plot, beautiful writing...

This was an excellent read, if not sold simply because of the vivid colourful Latino descriptions of the people, the persusaive sense of the fire of Latin America, and of course, the constant, often coarse, sex scenes.
It was such a bittersweet book, such an undercurrence of sadness and loss. It was essentially, a lament to old age and wasted youth. The detail is incredible, the emotions very real. It effectively captures the horrible sinking inevitability of death.
Hijelo's characters are wild, if not dislikable. This is perhaps the finest point of the piece; the characters are utterly human and terribly flawed.
Cesor's incredible libedo is at the forefront of the work, and there is a sense of humidity, sweat and the smells of sex that pervade the work. Hijelo should be admired for being able to conjuer up such senses. I found it a sensual read, however I disagree with many who describe the sex as sensual. It seemed very coarse, but this is not a criticism, it served its coarse purposes.
The only criticism I have is the distracting nature of many of the sex scenes. The sheer amount of them seemed somewhat unnecessary, however, they began to fade once Cesar aged.
Over all, innovative and superb.
