An author with knowledge, a helpful but confusing book

In a publishing climate and a culture where behind every commercial publication, you just know lurks some author and editor with $$$ in her or his eyes--particularly in such how to books like become rich in real estate, write a best selling novel, how homeopathy cured my pet anaconda, I found this book extremely informative, passionate about its subject, sincere, clearly written but, the major defect is its structure; Dr. Pacarelli has taken a lifetime of experience (he says he's treated 6,000 cases of RSI) and provided a clear explanation of the many causes and types of the disorder. You will learn that "carpal tunnel" syndrome, which is the media's and layperson's term for disorders arising many from keyboarding (in the past typical sufferers were more likely to be musicians, sewers, sign language interpreters, etc.) is the diagnosis in only EIGHT percent of the cases of hand and arm damage. Dr Pascarelli explains it all: there are anatomical charts of the muscle system, the nerve system, photographs of hand & arm anomolies among sufferers, diagrams & photos of the wrong way and the right way to sit at a computer station, exercises, treatments, ergonomics, etc. You will learn why your average doctor, even orthopedists don't make proper diagnoses, even treatment plans, and often lack the knowledge of the big picture of RSI that affects not just nerves, but soft tissue, musculature, mood, and a lot more. You will be given a chapter of illustrated exercise routines. You will learn (and understand through experience)that splints are basically worthless and often harmful (except perhaps for sleeping). You will learn a host of treatment modalities--some described in detail, lesser mainstream ones like Alexander Technique, Feldenkreis, and Rolfing--which he is not adverse to trying. He also is up to date enough to discuss devices like voice activated software and the like. The problem arises in that after a discussion of the many types of RSI, the treatment plans he advocates are not specified as to which particular RSI syndrome you have. They are all lumped together. Nevertheless, this book is written in a compassionate, authoritive, supportive tone, although the fact that he suggests some people might just not ever get better from RSI is pretty sobering and pessimistic.

A Great Service

Dr. Pascarelli has done us all a great service by explaining the various mechanisms of

RSI. He has done it in a way that makes a great deal of sense to the layman and has

been very helpful to me personally. Kudos to Dr. Pascarelli for writing a book for the

patients and sufferers of RSI, and not another book that only doctors can understand.

VERY helpful

A few months after starting a demanding programming job, my hands started hurting. A co-worker recommended an earlier version of this book. Actually, he said, "Leave work, go to the bookstore and buy and read it and don't come back until you finish it."

Pascarelli has a ton of information about RSI in this book, all of which makes sense. His main thesis is that RSI is easy to prevent and hard to cure, and his advice on how to avoid it is excellent.

If your hands are hurting, do like my co-worker said. Get this book right away and read it.

This book presents a unified theory of rare event simulation and the variance reduction technique known as importance sampling from the point of view of the probabilistic theory of large deviations. This perspective allows us to view a vast assortment of simulation problems from a unified single perspective. It gives a great deal of insight into the fundamental nature of rare event simulation.

Until now, this area has a reputation among simulation practitioners of requiring a great deal of technical and probabilistic expertise. This text keeps the mathematical preliminaries to a minimum with the only prerequisite being a single large deviation theory result that is given and proved in the text. Large deviation theory is a burgeoning area of probability theory and many of the results in it can be applied to simulation problems. Rather than try to be as complete as possible in the exposition of all possible aspects of the available theory, the book concentrates on demonstrating the methodology and the principal ideas in a fairly simple setting.

The book contains over 50 figures and detailed simulation case studies covering a wide variety of application areas including statistics, telecommunications, and queueing systems.

James A. Bucklew holds the rank of Professor with appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the author of Large Deviation Techniques in Decision, Simulation, and Estimation.

Un libro emotivo que NO es sólo para fans

Aunque yo soy fan de Ricky Martin (y, por lo tanto, no soy objetiva) puedo decir que creo sinceramente que este libro resultará interesante para todo tipo de público. Primero que todo, porque está escrito en forma amena, sin pretensiones, de manera muy ágil y entretenida. Esto, sin embargo, no quiere decir que sea superficial. Al contrario, más que un relato de hechos sensacionalistas (si buscan leer detalles escándalosos, se van a decepcionar, no hay nada de eso) es el testimonio de cómo Ricky ha sentido, cómo ha sufrido y disfrutado, una vida y una carrera extraordinaria.

Sorprende la sencillez y la humildad con la que relata sus éxitos y sus dificultades, tanto en lo personal como lo profesional, lo que hace que, pese a lo lejana que puede parecer la vida de una superestrella, sea posible entenderlo y empatizar con su historia. Es que, en vez de presentar el glamour que ciertamente lo ha rodeado, nos deja ver sus miedos, inseguridades, pasiones y alegrías; es decir, se muestra como un hombre y no como un "ídolo". Es increíble recordar determinadas épocas de su carrera y contrastar lo que el público veía con lo que pasaba emocionalmente en su vida. Conmueve leer sobre su proceso de búsqueda espiritual y su lucha por aceptarse a sí mismo. Y, en especial, emociona muchísimo el amor por sus hijos y su experiencia como padre.

Además de lo que se puede decir del contenido del libro, que me encantó (hay muy buenos reviews que pueden revisar, en inglés especialmente) quiero destacar que afortunadamente exista esta edición para Kindle en español. I have just finished reading the book. Through the over three hundred pages I learned a lot about van Gaal and the game, the business, and the world of soccer, I got a condensed introduction and more. The personality and character study of van Gaal presented through an abundance of examples, testimonies, interviews, and news reports in aggregate presented a finely wrought picture of Mr. van Gaal. I wonder if Mr. Meijer could now get an interview directly with the new coach of Man United? The writing style includes familiar sports page jargon and is generally lively; and the generally chronological organization is easy to follow. I recommend this book for anyone interested in people, sport in general, and especially for those who live and breathe soccer. You will enjoy the book.

Very interesting career with good insight into a very proud

Very interesting career with good insight into a very proud, driven coach. I thought his ability to deal both with his players and the various managements he has dealt with was revealing. As a professional coach myself (college level) I think I would have enjoyed the book were I to have read it when I was in the midst of handling all the various facets that coaching involves.
I thought for some reason the book would delve into his first year with Man U but obviously the timing of its release did not allow for that.
Instead, having read the book one now focused on his first Man U season to see if the van Gaal methodology would work. Obviously, the man still "has it."
Meanwhile, the Dutch FA (the politics of which are revealed in the book) is still muddled with another of the latest coaches resigning in the last few days. While Louis may have had some successes, traversing the Dutch national team landscape if riddled with land mines.

A magical, enlightening, and thought provoking book!

An enlightening thought provoking approach to advertising is found between the covers of this spell-book. It's creative and insightful throughout, and reaches beyond the "hard numbers" that often seem to dominate media buying, advertising and marketing campaigns, and news headlines. Roy pushes aside statistics and realizes that there are people just like you and me behind the numbers.
An advertising campaign is a link in a chain, only one part of the sales process. This book focuses both on creating a successful advertising campaign, as well as the other links in the chain including the creation of a pleasurable shopping experience that delivers the goods or services advertised. The Wizard presents lots of anecdotal tales and advice that relate to people and real world experiences. Chances are you will be able to personally relate to many of those contained within the book.
Some attention is given to advertising strategies in print, radio and television, and in what context and for what purpose they should be used. Much of "The Wizard of Ads" is a collection of feel good stories, however within each, is advice and insight into the world of sales, advertising, and people. As the author states, the reader will either love or hate the book. Ten steps to successful selling or advertising this is not, chock full of common sense approaches to reaching out and connecting with people who may become your customers it is.

Extraordinary thinking for communicators

In a way, the title of this book (also the nickname of the author, Roy Williams) is somewhat misleading. It suggests that only advertising mavens need read the book, but that is not so. This amazing writer/thinker has challenging insights for virtually anyone who communicates for a living, or who simply likes to communicate well. The short, one page chapters are perfect for quick reading on a regular basis. However, don't be surprised--the Wizard's writing is like Lay's potato chips...you can't eat just one. I would recommend it as a gift for anyone who communicates and wants to grow in that skill.

Great Book!

I just finished reading the Wizard of Ads, and was completely impressed with it on every level. My husband read it first and almost insisted that I read it as well. I'm glad I did. It was very informative and easy to read as well. Before reading this book, I was looking at the online reviews and noticed the one titled "Too Religious, Too Partisan, Yuck!" or something like that. After reading this book and learning a little bit about Roy Williams, I feel compelled to respond to his comments.

This book is in no way religious, and contains absolutely no political content whatsoever. The person who wrote that review apparently found out that Roy Williams once had lunch with a conservative Governor, and that he might be a Christian. He thought that reason enough to call Williams "creepy" and blast a book which it seems he never even read. Then in the middle of his review, this guy starts raling against the Bush administration and how he's responsible for boring TV ads during the Super Bowl. What??? This is obviously a bitter person who is just looking for reasons to slam people that might hold views different from his own. But in this case, the criticism couldn't be more unwarranted.

Roy Williams has personally trained executives from companies such as Proctor and Gamble, USA Today, and many others. The Wizard of Ads was named Business Book of the Year, and hit #1 on both the Wall Street Journal and New York Times business best seller list. You will find absolutely no political or religious activism of any kind in this book. What you will find is extremely valuable advice that, if applied, will make your business more profitable.
