From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Fifteen-year-old K has no family and no home. She has been told that her parents died in a bombing orchestrated by the Brotherhood, a radical separatist organization. Raised by her grandmother, then dumped in a halfway house, she has never gone to school and has no idea where she can go or what she can do when she turns 16 and is out of the care system. When she barely escapes death in a train bombing, her rescuer recruits her to infiltrate the Brotherhood and bring him names of those involved in violent activities. At first, K, whose new name is Verity Nekton, thinks she is doing right and avenging her parents' deaths, but gradually she finds that the Brotherhood is far more complex than she has been led to believe. She also finds that for the first time in her life, she has a home, friends, and family, as well as a budding romance with Brotherhood member Greg. As she begins to question what she has been told, she uncovers one deception after another until she must make a decision about her relationship with the Brotherhood and face a horrifying betrayal. This is a taut, suspenseful thriller that has obvious parallels with current political events, but what really makes this stand out is the characterization of K/Verity Nekton. The teen is strong and resourceful, but she is also morally conflicted and vulnerable to manipulation. The depictions of her growing affection for the Brotherhood community and her struggles to do the right thing are absolutely believable. VERDICT Recommend this one to teen readers who have tired of dystopias and are looking for something new and different.—Kathleen E. Gruver, Burlington County Library, Westampton, NJ

Review

“This is a taut, suspenseful thriller that has obvious parallels with current political events, but what really makes this stand out is the characterization of K/Verity Nekton. The teen is strong and resourceful, but she is also morally conflicted and vulnerable to manipulation. The depictions of her growing affection for the Brotherhood community and her struggles to do the right thing are absolutely believable. VERDICT Recommend this one to teen readers who have tired of dystopias and are looking for something new and different.”
—School Library Journal, starred review

“It's an irresistible page-turner that's full of complex characters rather than stereotypes, tackling a sensitive subject with storytelling that is as engrossing as it instructional about prejudice and the gray areas between right and wrong. A timely and riveting debut thriller about tolerance and the complexities of truth.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Waudby draws on universal themes that can speak to almost any “us vs. them” conflict, be it religious, ethnic, or cultural.”
—Publishers Weekly

“Waudby creates a fog of disquietude where both the reader and K become lost, and a final revelation will cause readers to think deeply about how easy it is to manipulate those disconnected from society and in need of a sense of belonging. In the end, whether K is Brotherhood or Citizen matters less than the understanding that social differences rarely occupy such tidy categories in real life. Impactful and thought provoking.”
—Booklist

"[a] deftly crafted novel... A riveting read from first page to last, "One of Us" will prove to be an enduringly popular addition to school and community YA Fiction collections."
—Midwest Book Review

Stunning Book -- great plot, language, characters
By Michelle S. Mood
This book is a stunning young adult thriller that will get under your skin and haunt you even after you finish it. With language of beauty, urgency, and meaning, we follow a teen through her journey in a dangerous nation divided by religion. Orphaned "K" gets recruited to try to flush out terrorists in one of the main academies run by the religious fundamentalists. K's world has been strictly defined by her "citizen" status, which comes with perks denied the "hoodie" fundamentalists. Her arrival in the other half of the city opens up a whole new world for her -- one that gives an alternative narrative to the citizen-vs-hoodie story she has learned. K navigates an alien culture, which is written with creepy realistic details of being watched and judged and in danger. I won't say anything more about the plot, but I will say if you aren't sucked in by the first few pages, I'd be very surprised. Each character is well drawn and full-fledged, the action is incredible, and the ending superb. I think I held my breath through most of the book. It's a book that will keep you up at night -- don't start it if you have anything important the next day. ;)

Excellent and timely thriller!
By Danielle @ What Danielle Did Next
We live in uncertain times, a world where lines are increasingly blurred and crossed, where zealots think nothing of spilling blood for their cause while the innocent bystander is caught in the crossfire. Despite this – love, hope and friendship continue to blossom as people stand against the extremists and strive for peace.

ONE OF US by Jeannie Waudby is a perfect example of this never-ending battle as we meet K, a fifteen year old orphan whose life has once again been touched by tragedy as she narrowly escapes a terrorist attack. Recruited by Oskar, an undercover policeman to infiltrate the other side, K soon learns that the truth isn’t always black and white and the enemy so easy to recognise.

K’s world consists of the Brotherhood and the Citizens. Warring for years, the two sides have agreed on an uneasy peace and have begun a reconciliation process to integrate the Citizens and the Brotherhood into one cohesive society. Transgressions such as the bomb attack K experienced threaten its shaky survival. As an attempt to discover potential militant and rogue elements of Brotherhood society, Oscar’s unit recruits K to attend a Brotherhood school and identify students at risk of being drawn to the extremists and used as pawns in their fight. As K is embedded deeper into the Brotherhood, she begins to learn that there are two sides to every story and the “truths” she has been told as a Citizen may not be as accurate as she once thought.

ONE OF US is a tense and thrilling story about betrayal, propaganda, trust and recognising that while there is much to tear us apart, it’s the things that truly make us human that are most easily identifiable and vital for our collective survival. Love, honour and truth –it can be a struggle to find common ground at times, however looking deep within yourself and remembering that hate is taught and not born is a courageous step towards balance and peace. As K spends time with her Brotherhood students, she learns that the actions of the few cannot be allowed to taint the goodness of the many and believing one-sided media reportage without question is dangerous and naive.

From the very first pages to the nail-biting finale, Waudby keeps the reader on edge as we accompany K on her journey of self discovery, reaching deep within herself to find the courage necessary to follow her convictions and stand for what’s right. There’s a strong thread running through the book of manipulation and distortion that keeps both K and the reader on their toes and ensures the pacing of the book never falters. The primary and secondary characterisation was excellent and I really felt I got to know the characters and grew to care for them and their respective stories.
The world-building was strong and left me feeling like I had a good grip on the fragility of the societies in question however it did leave me frustrated that it wasn’t explicitly mentioned what the reason for the split was and what the fundamental differences, be they religion, race, cultural were; however it wasn’t a deal breaker and the importance of the characters themselves was always at the forefront of the plot and therefore it was never a real distraction.

Overall, ONE OF US is a skilfully crafted, tension filled book with a timely plotline and wonderful characters and left me feeling both satisfied and intrigued to read more from Jeannie. Highly recommend.

Waudby entices readers with an action packed scene that promises more to come – and she doesn’t disappoint. Meet K
By Rae
Please Note: I received an ARC of One of Us by Jeannie Waudby from Running Press for an honest free review.

Right from the beginning, Waudby entices readers with an action packed scene that promises more to come – and she doesn’t disappoint. Meet K, that’s right just the letter, and her world of citizens vs. Brotherhood. As a fifteen orphan, she is easily manipulative and expendable. Her parents and grandmother have been dead for years, leaving her in the hands of a system that doesn’t seem to care what happens to her.

When a bomb goes off at the train station, a passion to help is ignited in K and then Oskar enter the scene. He saved her life, her saw to the girl beneath her façade, and she owed him. So when given the choice to become a spy, to bring down the enemy, she did what any fifteen year old inspired girl would do – she said yes. From there life gets even more complicated for our protagonist as she becomes Verity Nekton. She is thrown into a world she has been taught to fear. She wears red checkered print, becomes an “other” of society, and enters a game where the rules aren’t very clear.

When she starts to care about the new friends, Celestina, Greg, Serafina, and Emanuel, she meets in the Brotherhood and when the things she sees and hears don’t mash up to the information that Oskar are feeding her, K isn’t sure what to do. Stuck in between two worlds, with two different identities, K has to make a choice. Does she stay with the Brotherhood and continue to fall in love or does she complete her assignment and bring the carefully constructed order of her two worlds falling down?

Immediately I felt sympathy for K. She is faced with a choice that would have had me crumbling into a sobbing pile of indecision. The threat she is up against has a name and a face. She knows she is supposed to be afraid and hate them. Yet her gut tells her something isn’t right because these people are just as scared, just as worried. Waudby does a beautiful job creating complex characters that aren’t just one dimensional. K had me annoyed one minute at how easily she was manipulated and wanting to hug her the next when she just didn’t know what to do. Verity, meaning truth, was an ironic name choice and yet didn’t take away from K’s character at all. The only real problem I had with this book was that it ended… and I wanted to know more. Oh and I can’t forget about Greg. He is just… so cute. I don’t want to spoil anymore. Just read the book!

In a nutshell, no one is exactly who they say they are. Everyone has secrets. This world of morals and coming of age is mixed with politics and social expectations. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who knows what it feels like to make a life changing choice and or… anyone else! Growing up isn’t easy. There will be mistakes – but like K, we just have to have a little courage to keep going and do the right thing.

Women and Development in the Third World (Routledge Introductions to Development), by Janet Momsen

For all societies, the common denominator of gender is female subordination. For women of the Third World the effects of this position are worsened by economic crisis, the legacy of colonialism, as well as patriarchal attitudes and economic crises.
Feminist critique has introduced the gender factor to development theory, arguing that the equal distribution of the benefits of economic development can only be achieved through a radical restructuring of the process of development. This important new book reviews both policy and practice in Latin America, Africa and Asia and raises thought-provoking questions concerning the role of development planning and the empowerment of women.

Informative, but outdated
By Kristal Miles
Women and Development in the Third World by Janet Momsen gets to the heart of crucial issues concerning the development of women in the third world. Momsen's book is very enlightening for those who are unaware of the developmental problems women face in the third world. Also, Momsen is helpful to provide case studies of real life situations. However, for those who have some knowledge of issues in the third world, Momsen's book is simply a reminder of problems that merely seem common sense. Additionally, Women and Development in the Third World is very quick reading, but the statistical data and analyses provided are outdated by nearly a decade.

An eye-opening look at women in development
By Sam J. Ritchey
Momsen gives the reader a detailed and data saturated presentation of the predominant reasons behind and the characteristics of discrimination against women in 3rd world countries. She makes salient points about local economic function and readily backs up her hypotheses with graphs and tables chock full of econometric goodness. But the book drags at times, especially when she delves into data doldrums. She rescues herself through a well constructed argument that helps neophytes like me understand the complex issue at hand. Overall, a good effort and extremely informative. Keep up the good work.

Short Review
By Lauren McCutcheon
Women and Development in the Third World asks and answers questions about why women stand where they do in the developing world. The result of women's labor both within and outside of the home is explored in depth. The strength of this short book is its ability to keep the reader's interest, even while quoting hard data. This is not a feminist complaint about the subordination of women; it is an objective look at the role women play in the economies of the developing world.

Outdated, I would not recommend.
By C. Shaw
I ordered this book and was seriously disappointed (I returned it). It is OK for basic pharmacology, but all of drug listings are seriously outdated, no azithromycin, no marbofloxacin... I would go on, but I stopped looking. I would not recommend this text. The "Handbook of Pharmacology" by Hsu is the updated version and definitely worth the bigger price tag.

Great quick reference! A little old
By Elizabeth Adam
I had a professor lend me her copy of this book. It is is an excellent quick reference. The outline format is wonderful and makes the book very easy to flip through, However, it is outdated. Dr. Hsu is one of the co-authors of this book and he has an updated version which I would recommend. It is called "the Handbook of Veterinary Pharmacology" and there are two editions of it.

Actual Personal Statements from Successful Applicants
By David De Sousa
If you are planning to attend a graduate or professional school, you will have to submit a successful application, accompanied by a first-rate personal statement.

Of all the tasks we usually face when applying to graduate and professional schools, from choosing universities to preparing for and taking admission and standardized tests, from soliciting recommendations to having transcripts send out, writing a good personal essay is among the most important and difficult to accomplish. The strong competition for admissions to grad schools, the personal statement often becomes a crucial element of your application package. It is the one element that can set you apart from the competition and open the door to your successful application.

This book describes the mistakes that applicants commonly make, and offer advice on how to make your statements as effective as possible. This handy reference is packed with inside advice and proven strategies to help you get into your first choice schools. Among other things you will learn:

- What questions are asked an all the most popular professional and graduate school applications.
- How to create and write personal essays that impress admission officials.
- What goes into a recommendation letter, and who should write it.
- How to handle in-person interviews.

Absolutely a must have for anyone applying to graduate and professional school.

Review of Perfect Personal Statements
By A Customer
Every year, college students across the country prepare to enter the workforce or graduate school. One important part of this process is writing a personal statement that describes and applicant's goals, experiences, and future plans. Mark Alan Stewart is an expert on graduate level entrance exams. His book, Perfect Personal Statements, provides information and advice for college students seeking admission to graduate and professional schools.
Stewart's book is easy to read and understand. He answers the common questions like, "How will my essay be evaluated?" and "Should I discuss that glaring blemish in my past, or should I ignore it?" Stewart also provides students with minor details, like how to dress for an in-person interview. Finally, the advice from medical, law, and business school experts could prove to be helpful. The experts provide specific information about what they look for in an application. Each type of school has different standards and it is beneficial to know what admission offices across the country like to see.
College students applying to graduate schools tend to be very busy. They don't have time to read a long and confusing book. Mark Alan Stewart seems to have kept this in mind. He has packed a lot of information into only 114 pages. The book is also divided into sections that allow the reader to quickly find information on certain subjects. Stewart's book helps to simplify the application process and provides students with strategies to prevent them from feeling overwhelmed and frustrated.

Good not great.. but real example
By Sarawoot Chittratanawat
The title said so. This is the guide for writing statement. Unlike other books, this book won't show the typical format. This book, however, shows the "real" statement of applicant who success. Many examples are interesting. Moreover, the guideline of recommend letter request is very good. It's not only for people who ask letter of recommendation, but also for the recommendation letter writter can see what they should said to thier students. I disagree with other reviewer that this book is not limited only Law, Business, and Medical school. It's true that the title said it and the examples are to Law, Business and Medical school. However, if you read it carefully, many examples and guidelines can be used in other school as well. This book is well written and organized. However, due to limited resource, example and guideline, this book is only in 3 stars.

    Great Photos, Fun Facts
    By Grampy
Excellent close-up photography of some amazingly colorful and attractive spiders. "Spider Facts for Kids" by Cindy Bowdoin will fascinate young children, but do not underestimate your own fascination with the photos and text in this book. The book is rated for ages 9 - 12, but perhaps a more accurate title would be, "Spider Facts for Kids from 9 to 90", because the urge to read on will not dissipate at the age of 12.

If you are at all like me, you will be somewhat surprised at the bold and brilliant colors and patterns found on so many of the spiders featured in this little book. You will also be surprised at the great variability to be found in the many, many spider species worldwide. You may even be surprised to be so surprised, but it quickly becomes obvious that there is a lot more to spiders than what you may think you know.

This book has a lot to offer all ages, and you may find yourself looking at spiders from a whole new perspective after you peruse "Spider Facts for Kids". Believe it or not, you may even have fun as you learn to appreciate a spider's contribution to planet Earth.

    Great photos
    By H. Temple
The photos are labeled with the name of the spider, but the font is so small you can hardly read the text. Based on what I know about spiders, the text seems to be correct and well written without nonsensical statements.

But no information sources are listed. How can anyone have faith in a book if they do not know where the author got the information? No photo sources or photo credits are cited either.

I am very upset with the turn out of this book. When I read it i'm going to be afraid that it's going to fall apart because it already is. For something this worn down I would have rather paid half of what I did.

    A Breath of High-Octane Oxygen!
    By Amazon Customer
Who’d have thought that two warring neighbors in an upscale neighborhood (Malibu, CA) could escalate their squabbles to an epic level? I spent a lot of time wondering "Blimey, could this work in everyday life?"

Hey folks, here’s my tuppenceworth. Two memorable characters: One good, a sophisticated lawyer, but still a “babe in the woods” compared to the other, a crafty son-of-a-gun, more cunning than the Horned One himself, and this bloke, well, he wears his charisma thick on his sleeve. So I’m thinking, have we finally entered the age of the thinking thriller? If one discounts the purple prose pouring unctuously from Machiavelli’s lips (which incidentally fits this impostor’s persona to a T), it’s a bloody brilliant novel—a novel exploiting a novel concept! The plot builds momentum like an opus. If you must know, by the time it reached its crescendo towards chapter 35 or so, I was on my feet cheering, ready with a standing ovation and a bottle of Michelob in my right hand—cf. last chapter. All right, I’m a bit of a cat lover, too, but still!

I’ve got to warn you, though, or you'll find yourself sneaking moments out of your busy day to decrypt the meaning of life using Machiavelli’s clever word acrobatics, which goes by a fancy French name for voodoo-something-or-other, but is nonetheless an eminently patentable formula if you ask me! In fact, I think I've just glimpsed the writing on the wall, and if I’m not deluded it reads: CHASE’S BOOK GARNERS PLAUDITS ON GLOBAL SCALE!

For a jaded bloke like myself, reading Know Thy Neighbor was like a breath of high octane oxygen after spending hours in a cigar smoke-filled room.

“I solemnly sear that I am up to no good.” (ch. 10 pg. 192)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the Harry Potter series. It follows Harry and his friends through the excitement that is their third year at Hogwarts. In the start of the book, we find Harry doing his homework by flashlight under his bed sheets- as any proof of his time at that wizarding school is forbidden by the Drusley’s. It’s Harry’s birthday and for the first time in his life, he receives birthday cards and presents from his friends Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. During a visit from Aunt Marge, Vernon and Harry make a deal, if he can keep Hogwarts a secret, Vernon will sign Harry’s permission slip to visit Hogsmead on the weekends. Unfortunately that goes out the window when Marge insults Harry’s family and he accidentally inflates her, whoops. The Knight Bus then picks up Harry after he leaves the house suddenly, but not after seeing something peculiar in the bushes…
The main conflict of this novel is the fact that escaped prisoner Sirius Black is on the loose and dangerous. Dementors have made Hogwarts their home for the year and even made a little pit stop on the Hogwarts Express to make sure Sirius Black wasn’t aboard. While they didn’t find the prisoner on the train, they did find Harry, because of the sorrow and death he has already witnessed the dementors were drawn to him. The mysterious person (who we find out to be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher) is at the ready to produce a Patronus charm, which is used to ward of dementors with a happy memory.
The school year starts and the dementors are not respecting the boundaries that Dumbledore has put into place. They even disrupt a Quidditch match and send Harry flying off of his broom and his Nimbus 2000 into the Whomping Willow. Harry get used to his new classes and the frequent disappearance and reappearance of Hermione as she seems to be taking more class than any average witch or wizard can handle. Third year is when students start taking Divination and it’s not Harry’s favorite subject to say the least. Professor Trelawney often tells Harry he is in grave danger after finding the Grim in his cup, and she becomes overcome with a prophecy when they are alone in the classroom. "It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant's aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. Tonight... before midnight... the servant... will set out... to rejoin... his master..." (ch.16 pg.324)
The story concludes with Harry, Ron and Hermione using Hermione’s Time Turner to not only save Hagrid’s friend Buckbeak, but also Harry’s innocent godfather Sirius Black, who has spent the last 12 years in Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. With the help of their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (who is also a werewolf!) Remus Lupin; Harry finds out more about his parents past and how their secret keeper and friend Peter Pettigrew betrayed them.
This is easily my favorite Harry Potter book out of the seven. I’d give it ten out of five stars if I could. It introduced me to my favorite character of the series (Remus Lupin) and helped to continue the story of Harry Potter and helped Harry find out more about his parents before they died. He also was reconnected with his godfather and James’ best friend Sirius Black.
