The Best Volume Yet.

I can't really say anything about this Volume without giving away spoilers regarding the events that take place. All I can tell readers of the manga to prepare for some incredible revelations regarding the characters, brilliantly executed plot-twists, and great insight into the World of Blood Lad. Essentially, this volume serves as a major turning point for the series.

This is volume 5, BUT it is volume 5 for the kindle. The downloaded version of Blood Lad is much smaller than the manga, which is why this says volume 5. If compared to the manga, it is what the third volume is.

Utterly Hopelessly Dreadful

The first half of the this volume is a major high-point in the story. Many of secrets of the past are brought to light and the anticipated confrontation that was insinuated in the previous volume unravels in a very unexpected way. The overall tone during this particular part of the story is one of futility and powerlessness. The second half of this volume feels like it completely breaks down the tone and tension in a way that I personally thought was perfect and kinda am not surprised by at this point (it's something that you should expect from this manga). The subtitle I would give to this volume would be: Our Lowest Point

Hiding in the Open, Neumark

This unusual and gripping memoir is not a "Holocaust story" about the horrors of death camps. Instead, it treads a lesser-known path, in which the Holocaust, through the courage and ingenuity of an exceptional young man, is evaded. It is a story of his escape and survival on the "Aryan side," of a constant fear of discovery while blending with the local population and "hiding" behind a false identity. It is a story of a teenager's sound, mature decisions under pressure; of daring and the taking of calculated risks; and of extraordinary coincidences and luck.

The story is peopled with a variety of characters: blackmailers threatening disclosure; ordinary people willing to risk their lives to provide shelter and food to a fugitive; resistance fighters, both Jewish and Polish; and Nazi police in their menacing uniforms.

This unique and amazing true story has all the elements of outstanding fiction: brilliant writing, interesting characters and insight into the human character and condition. I couldn't put it down.

paradoxes of good friendships in evil times

"Hiding in the Open," by Zenon Neumark is a marvel of a book to read. Important historical information and insight is presented in an amazingly readable, suspenseful coming-of-age story. We have the rare, detailed and perceptive precision of a scientist who, while presenting horrendous portraits of the Nazi character in the occupation of Poland and Austria, nevertheless writes with an adventure-story momentum. Somehow the positive, the paradoxes of the good amidst incredible evil, take precedence: the many wonderful friendships, support groups and casual and clandestine helpers and sympathizers that made possible the courageous escapes from the brutal Nazi forces, from the betrayers, and from the many other unsavory elements of humanity.

What fun to learn of the antiquated methods of preserving ice from the winter pond for use in the summer, to learn of the day to day details of life under Nazi occupation, to visualize the liberating arrival of the Russians in Vienna, and even to understand a few adages in German, Polish and Russian! (" A thief's hat glows.")

Along with "The Pianist," the "Suite Francaise," and other recent narratives, we have additional pieces of the historical puzzle filled in. This rare account is a fortunate gift for the world. Thank you Zenon Neumark

Minimal Mathematics Prerequisites
The mathematics background required for understanding most of the book is based on what can be reasonably expected from the average electrical, chemical or mechanical engineering senior. Too "Trendy" or Not Another Corporate Branding "How To" Design Book?

[[VIDEOID:mo12CZ0ITPC61OY]]This is a book about 500+ pages of contemporary graphic and logo designs. That is pretty much about many design books-catalogues in short.

But this one is about freedom. Yes, freedom of thought, freedom of style, freedom of exploration and paradigm breaking. There are tons of logo and corporate branding books out there but this book series stands out. Presented collections of logos are hip, crude and sometimes provocative. The book celebrates graphics design as it is rather then doing something permanent. It aims at the everyday design: logos for an exhibition, a local retail or online radio station.

Content of the book is divided into categories, which are: Corporate, Culture, Design, Fashion, Motion/ Games/ Media, Music, Art/ Unclassifiable, Political and Sports. Although it could be even better if there were some details on presented graphics, because it is not obvious where is real logos, concepts, presentations or just random graphics as they scattered all together.

Such a wide range of current creativity is a great place to begin your new graphic project and to get you thinking in a variety of ways. This is a great brainstorming tool. The variety of styles helps promote new ideas and concepts. The format of the book is also working on its usability. It is bound and stitched with thick hardboard cover and has a top printing quality. This book was made to be used long time.

If you haven't got any book on logo design yet, then it will be a great to start with. But if you are in search of a breakdowns of logo designs with deep case studies, as I mentioned before, this one is not a "how to" book.

If you are looking for heaps of ideas for type, logos, vector illustrations, and inspiration, then this book is it. Its pretty funky, with heaps of ideas for your own designs whether it be corporate or surf and skate. Its fun just flicking through it.

objective game annotation from topalov, everything else is biased

publishing a book to claim that kramnik was cheating (without solid evidence) is an unethical thing to do. topalov's team should have had the courage to accept defeat even though topalov played better chess than kramnik in this match but he blundered in critical moments. the quality of the games is above average and there are many exciting positions throughout the games. topalov's annotating is excellent; describing how he felt in various moments and revealing secrets of his preparation strategies. his analysis of the games are simple yet creative, but above all they were objective. however, the feeling of bitterness of topalov's team is sensed throughout the whole book which isn't pleasant at all for the reader. UPDATE: I recently changed the rating from 2 stars to 3 stars because I read the book again and the game annotations by Topalov proved to be a delight even when reading the second time. Still, the rest of the book (written by Ginchev) wasn't pleasant at all.

Very Interesting and Worthwhile

This is the story of the 2006 WCC match from the (unsuccessful) challenger's point of view. Topalov annotates each game played brilliantly - and yes, subjectively - but that is what makes this so good.

The narrative about the entire match puts everything into perspective. And again, it is from the challenger's point of view. The discussion about the defaulted fifth game is an eye-opener. My guess is that most people, after reading Topalov and Danailov's version, will have their doubts.

Still and all, quite a good book. Not quite Tal-Botvinnik 1960 by Tal, but still worthwhile.

Chess & Crime

This is a unique book about the "Unified" World Chess Championship in 2006 between Kramnik and Topalov.

First, it is one of those rare World Chess Championship books which is annotated by one of the contestants (Topalov) itself. This was last done by Kasparov 20 years ago. But unlike Kasparov who spent sometimes 20 pages on deeply analysing all possible variations of just one single game, Topalovs analysis is different, very much like Mikhail Tals' in his famous book on the 1960 Chess Championship against Botvinnik. Tal-Botvinnik, 1960
Like Tal, Topalov doesn't give really a whole lot of variations but instead simply explains why he made this or that move, why he chose an opening line, which plan he followed, what he was thinking during the game and where his opponent (Kramnik) surprised him or not. This gives the reader the feel of sitting at the chess-board right beside Topalov. You really don't have to be a chess-grandmaster to be able to read this book. Players of all strenghts can follow and enjoy the annotations. The match itself proved to be exciting till the end. The championship had to be decided - for the first time ever - in a tie-break.

And there is something else that makes the book unique and it has nothing to do with the chessgames itself.
The match produced quite a big "scandal" outside the chessboard. Both players could claim to be Chess Champion at the time of the match, so tensions were understandably high, as one player would loose his title.
Topalovs Team - obviously unnerved by an unexpected 2-point lead by the opponent Kramnik after the first two games! - came up with cheating accusations against Kramnik and produced a scandal reminiscent of the famous chess matches Fischer-Spassky 1972 or Karpov-Korchnoi 1978. (The original title of the bulgarian edition of this book is "The Toilet War".)
This story outside the chessboard is not told by Topalov himself but by his co-author Ginchev, who was a member of the Topalov Team on-site in Elista.
Although Ginchev fails miserably in convincing the reader about the "facts" he and his Topalov team is providing - I personally sympathize with Kramniks' cause after reading the book - the whole story is a highly enjoyable read and a rare insiders' view of events.

Already a modern classic IMO.
Better get yourself a copy before the book gets out of print. These kind of chess championship books rarely see a second edition. (The book by Tal on the 1960 match for example was out of print for 16 years; and Kasparovs books on the 1985/86 matches are ......still out of print.)

Gr 3–5—Based on a true story, this book opens with a young reporter for a British newspaper interviewing veteran Henry Friston about the pet tortoise he obtained when he served as a sailor in World War I. Friston relates his life story and shares his diary, describing his childhood as a poor student who daydreamed about traveling the world. As a young man, he joins the Royal Navy on the eve of the war. He rescues the wounded on Gallipoli, where he encounters the tortoise, names it Ali Pasha, and brings it aboard his ship. Ali becomes a mascot for the gun crew. After witnessing more action, Friston returns to England with Ali Pasha to live out the rest of his days as a gardener, with Ali becoming a local tourist attraction. This is an intriguing story that provides vivid accounts of battles and insight into one who fought. Haunting drawings convey the grimness of war in a way that children will find relatable, while maps and a few photographs flesh out the events. The title is somewhat misleading, as the tortoise is a fairly minor character (the bulk of the story focuses on Friston's war experiences). The book lacks a glossary for those not versed in Briticisms. Minor criticisms aside, this is a captivating story that will be read in one sitting. I believe in all my years of working in children's literature, this is the first book I have seen about the battle of Gallipoli geared towards young adults. Done in diary format, it will grab the attention of a reluctant readers - esp of the male gender.

Addictive!

I loved this series of books! I hope there is more to their story some where down the line. Ashley is a strong kind want to save the world woman, I just loved her character. Daniel "Danny" was a hot alpha male-ish sexy as all out man whom met his match with Ashley. The story of them falling in love and all they endured from their past and being there to get through it was to me quite touching having been through similar circumstances myself at about the same age. It just goes to show you don't always have to be a victim and life can go on with much happiness. I would totally recommend this set.

I would have loved it a lot more if not for the grammar and spelling mistakes. For me that can truly ruin a good book.
