Pavlenko considers the socio-political circumstances that led to the monolingual status quo and shows how the invisibility of bilingual participants compromised the validity and reliability of findings in the study of language and cognition. She then shifts attention to the bilingual turn in the field and examines its contributions to the understanding of the human mind.

You may love it or you may hate it – but you certainly will not be able to ignore it.

The story begins with the protagonist, Vikrant Vaidya, writing to the President of India from prison. Convicted of murdering his neighbor, Vikrant, instead of the usual mercy letter that prisoners write, writes a letter that intrigues the President. As a result, the President requests his friend and former CBI head, Vidyasagar to look into Vikrant’s case. When Vidyasagar picks up the case, he has little knowledge, but soon he is ensnared in a loop of conspiracies that are much larger than one expected.

"I was born in a mentally retarded nation."

The first line of the book had me hooked to the book. The author is speaking about my country and I cannot deny but I have often thought in the same lines. As a result I immediately warmed up to the character of Vikrant. He was a voice that I loved hearing throughout. The author has done an expert job of narrating his story just right – without going overboard in any aspect. It would have been so easy to have turned preachy and have the author rant about some issue or the other for pages. But instead, everything was kept straightforward and to the point. The book covers everything that our nation stands for - cricket, books, caste system, religion, politics and even corruption. The book gives us an unbiased (at least I felt so) view at our nation and at us. And while most of it is not pretty one cannot but appreciate the author’s viewpoint. The plot has enough to offer to something to everyone and some twists did take me by surprise too. However, I do have issues with the ending and I am not sure if I agree with the author on it.

This is one of those books that might elicit extreme reactions from people because of the sensitive topics included.

World War I: The American Experience

"Over There" is an eloquent telling of the story of the American involvement in World War I. It covers all aspects of the American experience including domestic society and politics, army organization and soldier heroism.

In the early parts of the book, Farwell explains the series of German actions which gradually drove an isolationist nation to war. The tug of war, between interventionists such as Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge, and isolationists lead by Sen Robert LaFollette, left Woodrow Wilson in the middle, his actions pleasing to no one. We read of the extreme Anti-German frenzy which arose after the declaration of war. The frenzy manifested itself in drill sergeants who repeated false reports of German atrocities, Billy Sunday's assertion that "If you turned Hell upside down you would find "Made in Germany" on the bottom' and mobs which stoned dashounds. Although Liberty Cabbage and Liberty Pups reverted to Sauerkraut and dashounds, German Shepherds remained Police Dogs and wristwatches, necessitated by uniforms devoid of watch pockets, remained popular.

With the declaration of war the problems turned to mobilization and equipment. One thing which surprised me was the meager American industrial contribution to the war. Where were the railroads and industry which had been so crucial to North victory in the Civil War, the arsenal of Democracy to come in World War II or the creators of cruise missiles and smart bombs? In World War I the U. S. was definitely a supplier of raw man power to use French and British aircraft and artillery.

General Perhsing's struggle to organize and preserve an American Army gets appropriate attention. With the introduction of U. S. Troops into battle the focus shifts to heroes and battles. Eddie Richenbacher, Quintin Roosevelt and Alvin York are just a few of the heroes mentioned. This book is not all praise, however. American shortfalls are reported and Pershing's leadership is critically examined.
Woodrow Wilson is the leader whose performance seemed to alienate almost everyone. To interventionists, including Theodore Roosevelt, Wilson was slow to enter the war, deficient in mobilization and weak in accepting an armistice, rather than demanding unconditional surrender.

This book is readable, enjoyable and informative. I highly recommend it for anyone with an interest in U. S. involvement in World War I.

A starting point on the US & WWI

I listened to the Audio Cassette version of this book. Mr. Farwell provides an overview of the United States' participation in the war from the US's total lack of preparedness in the beginning to the large American Expeditionary Force (AEF) turning the tide at the end of the war.
Farwell spends a lot of time describing President Wilson's effort to manage the war, US troop strength and training, supply problems, the effect of the war on the home front, the difficulty of black soldiers and the view of the war through the eyes of common soldiers and not so common soldiers such as George Patton and Harry Truman.
Along the way, Farwell debunks several commonly held (at least to me) notions about the war, such as: the air war had no strategic effect on the outcome; Germany's U-Boat war caused big problems for US shipping before and during the war; and that the US had to rely on France for guns and Britain to ship the troops to Europe.
John Richmond provides wonderful narration throughout, including French accents where appropriate and providing the proper pronunciations to the French towns and villages.
All in all, a good primer, though not in-depth narration, for how the US fought WWI.

About the Author
Arthur Kohl is a program manager in the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International. He previously worked for the Fluor Corporation, where he was Chief Chemical Engineer in the Research Division. He has been awarded many honors for contributions to chemical engineering. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is listed in American Men of Science and Who's Who in the West. He has been awarded more than 25 patents in gas purification and other chemical engineering fields.

Richard Nielsen is a Director of Process Engineering at Fluor Daniel's Irvine, California office. His 20 years with Fluor Daniel include work in gas treating, gas processing, and refining. He holds a BS degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MS degree from the University of Southern California, and an MBA degree from the University of California, Irvine.

I have been wanting to buy this book (which is a classic on the subject) for some time but held off as it worked out too expensive when adding mail charges to Australia (it weighs 5 lbs!). On re-checking I found Amazon's current price very reasonable and jumped at it. I was delighted with the packaging and quick delivery.

Best all-around book on the subect.

I've bought just about every kitchen remodeling guide out there, and a huge stack of kitchen magazines. I wish I'd found this book earlier in the process -- it's by far the best. Practical advice and methodology on every step of the process from space planning to a great system for coming up with a workable color scheme (I was REALLY going nuts over this aspect, and now have an aesthetic approach that makes sense). Little things that other books don't discuss, like planning for the space needed to open cabinet and appliance doors, and what's considered a practical width for passage between a stove and an island, and setting up a working temporary kitchen for use during the project. It discusses all options and doesn't necessarily embrace all the latest fads. Do you need an island, or will it just clutter up your floor plan? It prepares you for what to expect during the process -- hiring contractors, the delays, when to order things, should I hire a designer or an architect? Or neither? And what's the difference? Lots of color photos and diagrams, discussion of various materials, relating your remodel to the architectural history of your house -- I could go on. All in simple, thoughtful, common-sense prose by authors who've apparently been there many times and know the joys and the pitfalls -- and have a great sense of design. You won't regret getting this book.

Nuts and bolts of remodeling and kitchen design

There are so many kitchen design books on the market. If you want the best one, buy this. Why? Because it forces you to think about how you want to function in your kitchen before you even begin to select cabinets, appliances, fixtures and fittings. What good does it do you to install attractive features like professional ranges and refrigerators, expensive cabinetry and lighting if, in the end, you have to walk clear across too long an area to get from your refrigerator to your sink? This book guides you to examine how you work in your kitchen, e.g., whether one or two people cook, whether you entertain, whether you have special needs for children, etc. There is a great section that teaches you about the hidden systems in your walls, like plumbing and electrical, in a way you can understand, so you can be informed about these hidden elements and aren't a total dummy when talking to your contractor and when determining whether what needs to get done as far as plumbing and electrical work is in fact being done. Might prevent the old "being taken to the cleaners" problems we've all experienced as, say, when dealing with auto mechanics. The section on construction scheduling and contractors is invaluable. The chapter entitled "Designing with the Physical Space" is terrific. This book is worth every penny and probably a lot more in terms of making yourself aware of all aspects of your kitchen remodeling project, what you want and what you don't want in terms of the functionality of your finished kitchen. As it is an expensive remodeling project to undertake, it seems worthwhile to make yourself as knowledgeable as possible. After reading this book and knowing I have it as a reference, the task of remodeling the kitchen seems much less overwhelming.

Start with this book!

If you are remodeling or building a new house this is the kitchen book to start with.
What it is: a kitchen design book that covers everything from floor plan layout to appliances to decorating to the plumbing, heating, cooling, etc.
What it is not: a nuts and bolts "how to" book. A picture idea book.
I was fortunate to begin with this book. It covers every angle of kitchen design so I really had to think of everything when planning my new kitchen. I haven't built it yet but I feel very confident about my design because of the details this book made me account for.
For most people this book could be the single purchase necessary. This book covers the varying levels of needs that kitchen users have. If the kitchen is just a place to have coffee and warm up soup or restaurant leftovers, or if you are a family cook, the design basics you need are here. If you are a serious cook who entertains a lot, like me, you may need to add other resources to your library. Or if you want a show-piece kitchen, you may need to go further than this book. Whatever style of kitchen you are creating START here, then go to other resources if you need to.
Good pictures (and quite a few of them), though like I said it is not a picture idea book. Text is prosey and easy to read.
Very highly recommended.

Walidah Imarisha: Walidah Imarisha is a writer, organizer, educator and spoken word artist. She is the author of the collection of poetry Scars/Stars. Imarisha has also facilitated writing workshops, for students in grades three through twelve, in community centers, youth detention facilities, and women’s prisons.

Adrienne Maree Brown is a 2013 Kresge Literary Arts Fellow writing science fiction in Detroit. She has also received a 2013 Detroit Knight Arts Challenge Award to run a series of Octavia Butler based science fiction writing workshops. Adrienne has helped launch a loose network of Octavia Butler and Emergent Strategy Reading Groups for people interested in reading Octavia’s work from a political and strategic framework, and is building with Octavia E. Butler Legacy Network on other ways of extending Butler’s work.

Octavia would be very proud....

As a fan of speculative fiction and an aspiring writer in that domain, Octavia Butler has always been my matriarch. She is the writer that may not have been my first inspiration, but she certainly left a deep, lasting impression on my soul. Her work is so seminal and I want to weep every time I encounter a reader or writer unaware of her contributions. Octavia is as important in my mind to the fabric of “blackness” as any Civil Rights activist. Her work empowers and calls us to be great. Octavia’s faith in humanity’s ability to rise above so tremendous.

So imagine my absolute delight when I found out there was going to be a book from social justice movement figures dedicated to Octavia. I was ready to devour the stories and see just what was given birth from the minds of people who were already accustomed to dreaming. Any work where you fight for the marginalized if you’re not careful can make you cynical and cause you to lose sight of those dreams that propelled into doing the work in the first place. I wonder how many of these authors walked away from this collection feeling rejuvenated about their work. Because they certainly made me feel rejuvenated about mines.

There were quite a number of works in this collection and admittedly, some were stronger than others. But they all came packed with a message and I think that alone is powerful. In the interest of time and modern day attention spans, I’m going to mention the works that really crawled into my mind and/or heart and lingered there for a while. Like that one friend who you know will tell you what you need to hear even when you’re not quite ready to hear it. Some of the ideas took me to sad, contemplative places. But we need to wander through those spaces as much as we need to enjoy our happier moments. A reader and most certainly a writer has to take in the full richness of life, not just its sweeter moments.

“Revolution Shuffle” by Bao Phi was an excellent choice for the opening story. I was introduced to a new fear I had never thought about. Never even considered it whenever I watched anything related to zombies, but it’s a powerful point. We all know the privileged would be looking to point the fingers somewhere and in the story it was the Asians and Arabs. Like I said, it was a fear I never even considered and didn’t even realize that these groups probably live with daily. The day something terrible happens to America they’re likely going to be the ones with the finger pointed at them. It put a new perspective on things for me because it made me wonder just how much terrified a Muslim-American is of a terrorist attack happening versus your average American. They have to know that the hammer will fall on them first if such a thing was to occur. What a terrible thing to live with and this story takes that kind of racist stereotyping to a dark conclusion.

“Black Angel” by Walidah Imarisha struck me with its rawness and it also taught me something new. Any story that give me genuine knowledge will always anchor itself to my mind. This tale is gritty and revolves around a fallen Angel, but fallen because she disobeyed God by saving lives during a terrible war. It makes God seem cruel, but the Bible is full of enough examples of that to have precedence. And I enjoy stories that dig into the greater religious questions without being overly for one side or the other. The reader is allowed to draw their own conclusion. As far as what I learned, I had no idea that illegal immigrants were shipped away to maquiladoras like chattel. The story made me do research and I became livid with what I read. In that way and the first, this story enlightened me.

“Homing Instinct” by Dani McClain made me fearful for those who are so young and for those are still yet to be born. It broke my heart because the premise of the story seems like something that could potentially happen. The story centers on climate change and people being forced to choose a place to live in an effort to slow down the terrible damage we’ve already caused. People are going to be allotted only so many travel miles a year and people who are on the other side of the U.S. from their families (like myself) have to make some real hard decisions. This story was perhaps the most striking to me because it struck so close. I could relate to the main character’s struggle of wanting to stay true to themselves, but not wanting to leave their Mother all alone. My God, what a terrible decision to have to make on so many levels. Dani captured such immensity in such a small space. Truly a great piece of fiction here.

There are quite a few other pieces in this anthology (22 if I’m numbering right) that cover topics ranging from sexism, breaking gender norms, racism, deforestation, cultural destruction, twisted medical breakthroughs and so much more. There really is a plethora of topics here available for any sci-fi fan to explore. The anthology makes a powerful point early on that if you are interested in social justice then you must be interested in science fiction. Because the black people of today were only dreams and science fiction to our ancestors longing for freedom not so long ago.

we must be able to dream of a different one - is probably my favorite framework for anti-racist

This is one of the most phenomenal selections of speculative fiction short stories that I've ever read. The framing of the book - that all activism is science fiction or speculative fiction and that to change the world, we must be able to dream of a different one - is probably my favorite framework for anti-racist, anti-capalist, feminist speculative fiction. Phenomenal considerations of race, difference, gender, disability and ability, caplitalism, the prison industrial complex, and other issues. This is probably the best book I've purchased all year.

Great idea, BADLY written

While the intent behind this anthology was beautiful, the execution was poor. The stories were often amateur or downright terrible, the editing was of mediocre quality, and the whole thing was a poorly executed attempt to ride forward on Octavia Butler's hard-earned and well-deserved reputation as a magnificent science fiction writer. This was tragically NOT the collection I'd hoped it would be, and tagging Octavia's name on it only unfairly raises expectations as to the quality of the product. I can't recommend it.

It covers all types of jobs and offers some very practical advise to anyone from the first-time-out to the professional who has done a number of interviews.
